A bench of Justices KM Joseph and Hrishikesh Roy issued notice to the Maharashtra government, Mumbai civic body, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, and others on an appeal filed by the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association challenging the February 23, 2022 order of the high court.
The Bombay High Court on Thursday lashed out at the Maharashtra government over the threat given by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena about displaying the Marathi signboard on the shops and establishments in the metropolis.The division bench, consisting of Justices J N Patel and K K Tated, while hearing the petition, asked the state government to provide details of the preventive action the state has taken in response to the MNS deadline for Marathi signboards, which ended today.
'Traders have stocked up for upcoming festivals and will make a loss if stores remain shut now. We suffered last year. We can't suffer again. There is no scientific basis for closing all commercial establishments. How long will the government keep them shut?'
The HC said these matters cannot be considered in a PIL and the relatives of the doctor should file a separate plea or complaint before the correct forum.
'People are trying to save money because of uncertainty and insecurity.'
The Shiv Sena has spurned Congress' request to participate in the bandh.
